Optics for Engineers and Natural Scientists
Fundamentals and Applications
This book has 15 chapters.
After the introduction of optics in chapter 1, chapter 2 treats the geometrical optic. The text describes in detail the phenomena reflection, transmission, refraction and dispersion. It introduces and calculates lenses, explains optical instruments and the human eye. Besides the “classical” treatment of geometrical optics the book also shows the more modern calculation with matrix algebra. Chapter 3 treats radio- and photometry; particularly the radiation-physical and light-technical units. Chapter 4 is devoted to wave optics. It covers the effects of diffraction, interference, coherence, polarization and instrument specific applications. Chapter 5 explains the quantum character of light and the laser principle. Chapter 6 describes the large area of opto-electronics, for instances LEDs, laser diodes, displays and photo diodes. Chapter 7 treats the subject guiding of light and describes the various light guides and their properties. Chapter 8 describes lighting technology, chapter 9 laser applications, chapter 10 optical sensors and metrology, chapter 11 optical instruments, chapter 12 image forming technology and chapter 13 optic desi gn and simulation. Chapter 14 is devoted to optical phenomena in the sky and optical illusions. Chapter 15 summarizes the standards concerning optics and contains an index that helps the reader to find information quickly.
