If you asked seventeen-year-old Cass Williams to self-identity, she'd happily say she's fat, queer, and obsessed with the Tide Wars series. What she may not tell you - or anyone, for that matter - is that she spends her nights obsessively writing fanfiction online with a community of strangers who love Tide Wars as much as she does. When she's behind the screen - trading snark and laughs with her internet friends and roleplaying scenes as the fearless Captain Aresha - she doesn't have to deal with the stress of her mother walking out on her and father or the unexpected anxiety that comes with dating her longtime crush, resident cool girl Taylor Cooper.

But secretly retreating to her online life is starting to catch up with Cass. No one in her real life knows about the roleplaying or that her many nights of prioritizing Tide Wars over schoolwork has put her graduation on the line. And when Cass realizes she has feelings for Rowan Davies, her snarky and compassionate internet bestie, things get even more complicated. As Cass's lies continue to build, she must decide what to do - be honest about her double life and risk losing her safe space or keep it a secret and risk destroying her relationships and academic future.
