REBOOT

Amy Tintera

Harper's lead title for May 2013.

REBOOT is about a girl who rises from the dead, is recruited as an elite special-ops soldier and must break free from her human captors to save herself and her fellow Reboots.

At 17, Wren is the deadliest Reboot in the Republic of Texas. She has spent five years honing her skills at the Reboot compound, a facility designed to mold children who have risen from the dead into the perfect police force. At the compound, the Reboots are closely monitored, drilled in hand-to-hand combat and sent on deadly missions to "clean up" the crime-ridden slums.
Every Reboot can self-heal within minutes of injury (except to the head) but their strength and skills are directly related to how long they were dead before they Rebooted. Wren - otherwise known as one-seventy-eight - was dead for 178 minutes before she Rebooted. She is the highest number and the best on the force. Her new trainee Callum- otherwise known as twenty-two- might be the worst. He can't fight. He can't run. He won't follow orders. And he smiles a lot - something that confuses Wren who prides herself on having no emotions.

When Callum refuses to perform an assignment, Wren's commanders order her to eliminate him. She has never disobeyed an order. She would never try to run. The humans are certain of this. Wren is not. What follows is a death-defying escape, the journey of two teens to rescue others of their kind and to find a safe place where Reboots can be "human" again.
