RED SONJA: CONSUMED
Red Sonja has been raising her sword in comic books since the 1970s, hit the big screen in 1985 (and will again), stopped by for a visit on the late-'90s syndicated TV series Conan and was animated in 2016's Red Sonja: Queen of Plagues. Now, finally, she's getting her own traditional longform book.
Sonja is a savage to her foes, an artisan with a blade, and a dry, untrained but irrepressible wit to those who make the mistake of underestimating her. In her 48th continuous year print, Red Sonja emotes an LGBTQIA+ identity, holding her long appeal to fans, which has allowed her to be as human, as imperfect and bawdy, as her barbarian male counterparts. From a fictionalized European town called Hyrkania, home of farmers, hunters and horsemen, Sonja was seemingly marked for a fruitful, if uneventful, life in her small village. But such was not to be.
Now, Sonja is alone, craving occasional company, wanting little more than a hot meal, a stiff drinkor severalthe chance to molten shag with anyone pretty enough to catch her scent, and oh yes, incidentally, freedom. Endless opportunity to follow her earthy whims is all she truly wants. But fate keeps dealing her another hand and her gifts make her a legend...
Gail Simone, best known for her work in comics on DC's Birds of Prey, Batgirl, and for being the longest running female writer on Wonder Woman to date is making her longform debut by reimaging Marvel and Dynamite Comics Red Sonja.
