REIGN OF THE FALLEN

Sarah Glenn Marsh

REIGN OF THE FALLEN is the first in a fantasy duology that follows a talented necromancer who must face down a deadly nemesis who has learned how to turn her magic into a weapon.
Odessa is one of Karthia's master necromancers, catering to the kingdom's ruling Dead. Whenever a noble dies, it's Odessa's job to raise them by retrieving their souls from a dreamy and dangerous shadow world called the Deadlands. But there is a cost to being raised--the Dead must remain shrouded, or risk transforming into zombie-like monsters known as Shades. If even a hint of flesh is exposed, the grotesque transformation will begin.

A dramatic uptick in Shade attacks raises suspicions and fears among Odessa's necromancer community. Soon a crushing loss of one of their own reveals a disturbing conspiracy: someone is intentionally creating Shades by tearing shrouds from the Dead--and training them to attack. Odessa is faced with a terrifying question: What if her necromancer's magic is the weapon that brings Karthia to its knees?

A lavish fantasy with a surprising and breathtaking LGBT romance at its core, Reign of the Fallen is a gutsy, unpredictable read that will grab readers by the throat and never let go....

Sarah Glenn Marsh has been an avid fantasy reader from the day her dad handed her a copy of The Hobbit and promised it would change her life; she's been making up words and worlds ever since. When she's not writing, Sarah enjoys painting, ghost hunting, traveling, and all things nerdy. She lives in Richmond, Virginia, with her husband and their menagerie: four rescued greyhounds, a bird, and many fish.

From page one, the story drops readers into a lush, intricate world where its inhabitants have learned to cheat death. It props up the traditional zombie trope while digging deeper and exploring themes of love, grief, and the consequences of circumventing death. Equally refreshing is Marsh's decision to create a main character in Odessa, who possesses flaws and makes mistakes. Hand this captivating novel to fans of Garth Nix's Old Kingdom series or Frances Hardinge's A Skinful of Shadows (2017).

In a fantasy world where neither life, death, nor love can be bound, readers will be mesmerized from page one. A decadent treat for the senses, I adored this dark jewel of a book.

Set against a kingdom in chaos, a power-hungry heir to the throne, and a newfound love interest between Odessa and Meredy, this is a story that cannot be put down. Odessa's imperfections will show readers how to overcome grief, fall in love, and learn to improve when making mistakes. Hand this to those readers who are looking for a strong female character.

This edgy fantasy doesn't just blur boundaries of genre, of gender, of past and present, life and death it explodes them.
