Dr. Crowther's study "The Trillion Trees" promises that environmental restoration could capture enough atmospheric carbon to significantly mitigate climate change. It instantly changed the environmental movement, inspired UN initiatives, and made Crowther the face of the global restoration movement. It also inspired a backlash from scientists who worried about counterproductive mass-plantings of monocultures. In this commercial debut, Dr. Crowther will show how everything within and around the tree connects. At the heart of this research is the understanding that every species in an ecosystem, from the millions of fungi in the soil to the macrofauna that dominate the landscape, relies on one another through an intricate series of feedback loops. If we understand how these loops work, we will understand why ecosystems are collapsing and we'll have the tools to revive the rich, diverse, and sustainable environments we love and need. Dr. Crowther's TED Talk on "The Trillion Trees" to fight climate change has received millions of views. A documentary about The Crowther Lab jointly funded by 8 major national broadcasting services is in production, for a 2025 release. Dr. Thomas Crowther runs the Crowther Lab at ETH Zurich, where he is a professor in the Department of Environmental Systems Science. His research is regularly published in top journals such as Nature, Science, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and he has been featured in popular media including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Guardian. He speaks regularly at conferences like Davos and the UN Convention on Climate Change and consults with major companies including Google and Salesforce.
