SAY EVERYTHING
A Memoir
Written with uncensored clarity and candor, Ione Skye's memoir is a wild ride of Hollywood gossip, confession, and glamour, as well as a deep reflection on the eternal lessons of a messy, sexy, unapologetically unconventional life.
In 1987, 16-year-old Ione Skye landed the breakout role of Diane Court, the Gen X dream girl who inspires John Cusack's iconic boombox serenade in the hit film, Say Anything. Skye is playing a picture-perfect valedictorian, but her reality is in fact, much messier. The kids were in fact, not alright.
Her father, folk-singing legend Donovanwhom she doesn't meet until she's 17, but whose love and acceptance Skye chases like the wind throughout her lifeleaves Ione wounded by his continual rejection. Seeking validation, Skye escapes through romances with Keanu Reeves, River Phoenix, Matthew Perry, and Robert Downey, Jr.; survives a toxic and codependent relationship with the much older Red Hot Chili Peppers' frontman, Anthony Kiedis, who at the time was addicted to heroin; leaves Kiedis to marry the Beastie Boy Adam Horovitz at 22 as an act of self-preservation; discovers she's bisexual; and blows up her marriage by compulsively cheating with a string of beautiful girls. A decade of sex, film, art, and adventure later, when Skye falls for the Australian musician Ben Lee, the two try to synchronize their experiences with yogis, gurus, and ayahuasca shamans. But Skye soon realizes that being in perfect alignment with a partner will not make her whole.
Set against a kaleidoscopic backdrop of Hollywood cults, lesbian supermodel cliques, Topanga Canyon sunsets, Indian ashrams, rock-royalty compounds, and the sets of classic late-century films like River's Edge, Gas Food Lodging, A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon, and Wayne's World, Skye's memoir is a moving and cinematic account of becoming famous in the time before the Internet and cell phones took the magic out of stardom.
Ione Skye made her film debut opposite Keanu Reeves in River's Edge, followed by her iconic role as Diane Court in Say Anything. Skye has appeared in other notable film and television projects including Zodiac, Wayne's World, Fever Pitch, Private Practice, Arrested Development, Beef, and much more. In addition to acting, Skye is a painter who has exhibited and sold her work for twenty-five years. She is the author of the children's book, My Yiddish Vacation, and cohost of the weekly podcast Weirder Together. Ione is the mother of two daughters and lives in Los Angeles with her husband, and collaborator, the musician Ben Lee.
