SEEN, HEARD, AND PAID

Alan Henry

The New Work Rules for the Marginalized

For readers of THE CONVERSATION by Robert Livingston and MORE THAN ENOUGH by Elaine Welteroth, SEEN, HEARD, AND PAID is an accessible playbook that may finally allow people of color, women, and the LGBTQ+ community to have the same access as those with privilege to career advancement and rewarding work.
Alan Henry has written about using technology and productivity techniques to work and live better for over twenty years. He discovered that, as a Black man, he didn't have access to some of the more powerful ways to hack your joblike only checking email once a day or blocking out time on your calendar to do deep work. Having written for Lifehacker, the New York Times, and, currently for Wired magazine, he realized, still, that there were moments when he was overlooked and excluded from the most interesting and career-boosting work.

SEEN, HEARD, AND PAID was born out of Henry's 2019 New York Times piece "Productivity Without Privilege: How to Succeed When Your Marginalized or Discriminated Against at Work", where he explored these struggles. Here, he takes an even deeper look, interviewing various experts including Meghan Dunbar, an inclusion and diversity consultant and co-founder of World-Changing Women, NYT writers, Hahna Yoon and Melanie Pinola, University of California researchers Joan C. Williams and Marina Multhaup, former Google developer Vivek Halder and New York times bestselling author Charles Duhigg, to come up with 15 powerful new work rules for anyone who feels marginalized, and offers real tools for career success and work satisfaction.

Here's a sample of the rules included:
Inclusion Only Works if Everyone Buys In (Being Marginalized)
Even "Positive" Stereotypes Have Negative Impact (Microaggressions)
Trust your Experience (Gaslighting)
Only Spend Time on Work That Gets You Attention (Being Seen)
Office Housework Will Never Get You Ahead (Getting the Glamour Work)
Figure Out Your Unique Contribution (Being a Superstar)
Be a Problem Solver, Not a Problem Complainer (Managing Up)
Don't Fall for Productivity Porn (Prioritizing Your Work)
Set and Protect Your Boundaries (Working Remotely)
Data is Power and Power is Money (Getting Paid)
Your Job Is Not Your Friend (Knowing When to Go)

Readers who feel unseen at work, no matter their background or situation, will find powerful takeaways.

Alan Henry's 'new work rules' are vital in our post-COVID world as workers reconsider and reclaim their power. For disabled people like me who've been consciously and unconsciously shut out of office opportunities and culture, this thorough and thoughtful guide will not only help you feel less alone but will give you tools to define your own success. An essential read for anyone trying to make sense of their place at work and in the world.

For those of us from marginalized identities, most books on office politics offer advice that not only doesn't work but actually makes us more vulnerable. Seen, Heard, and Paid is the workplace advice book for us. It's grounded in the reality - backed by data - that office politics is actively stacked against us. And it helps navigate those spaces while maintaining our dignity - and our sanity.
