When Dr. Joy started Therapy for Black Girls as a blog back in 2014, she did so to fill a void in the wellness industry. Noticing that there were not enough mental health resources that felt relevant, accessible and inviting (fun!) to Black women, she wanted to offer a warm space with basic resources to make women in her community feel less apprehensive about seeking support. While she knew that there would be a receptive audience, she was not prepared for the national outpouring of Black women, seeking a community where they could discuss issues surrounding mental health. Today, TBG is vibrant and ever-growing with a weekly podcast, a network of over 2,500 therapists across North America and a community of over 700,000 sisters who are prioritizing their mental health and working towards the best possible versions of themselves, together.

With Sisterhood Heals, Dr. Joy is looking to lean into her infectious warmth and humor as well as her approach to psychotherapy which is deeply rooted in the group therapy modality and the concept of “interpersonal process,” the belief that individual healing happens when we are able to rely and repair our relationships with others. Specifically, Dr. Joy focuses on the healing properties of such communion among Black women—a sisterhood that breeds openness, protectiveness, tenderness, and a powerful “something” that, despite all odds, has the ability to transcend even the most challenging day-to-day struggles.

With each chapter, Dr. Joy will draw on her years of clinical practice and her own personal story as well as the collective stories of the women in the TBG community to reveal the ways in which sisterhood can be the foundation for transformative healing. Taking the reader through chapters that cover the evolution of sisterhood, the exceptional powers of group therapy, the process of finding your people, as well as advice on overcoming the barriers that get in the way, the book is meant to be as much a prescriptive guide as it is a love letter to Black women.
