SIX FEET BELOW ZERO

Ena Jones

When 12-year-old Rosie and her younger brother Baker find their great-grandmother in her favorite chair, dead, Baker informs Rosie that calling 911 isn't an option. Great Grammy has a plan to keep them and their home out of the clutches of their grandmother, the greedy Grim Hesper - and she put it in writing.

The first item on Great-Grammy's to-do list? Put her body in the freezer and pretend she's still alive until their Aunt Tilly comes home -. from wherever she's hiding out, writing her next blockbuster book.

Rosie and Baker might not have a 9 p.m. bedtime anymore, but being in charge of their own lives isn't what they expected. Managing the house, each other, and keeping track of their lies and the influx of casseroles for their "sick" great-grandmother, all while trying to locate Tilly, turns out to be a lot of work. And when they don't follow through with a man who's supposed to cut down a huge maple tree and it falls on the house, Rosie and Baker end up in the police station, with everybody, including Grim Hesper, asking, "Where is your great-grandmother?"

When Hesper moves in to “take care of you darlings,” the battle for control of their lives and Great-Grammy's property becomes a war, and Rosie and Baker must use all the skills they learned from their dear and departed great-grandmother to win against the underhanded Hesper.

SIX FEET BELOW ZERO is a little awful, a lot of fun, and chock-full of a freezer's worth of heart.
