Author Erik Kirschbaum, who has known Klinsmann for almost a decade. Erik Kirschbaum has worked as a foreign correspondent for Reuters and other English-language publications from Germany for the last twenty-six years. Raised in New York City and Connecticut, Kirschbaum studied history and German at the University of Wisconsin, and he has been on the staff of several newspapers across the country. He is also the author of Burning Beethoven: the Eradication of German Culture in the United States during World War I, a work of nonfiction about the decline of German-American culture in America. Jürgen Klinsmann is a German soccer and former professional player who is currently the head coach of the United States men's national soccer team. He was a premiere striker for the West German team that won the 1990 FIFA World Cup and the unified German team that won the 1996 UEFA European Championship. He coached the German national team to a third-place finish in the 2006 World Cup. In 2011, Klinsmann was named head coach of the United States men's national team.
