SPARKS OF BRIGHT MATTER
An electric, spell-binding debut set in Georgian London, perfect for fans of Susanna Clarke and Imogen Hermes Gowar
Irish-born Peter Woulfe is a young, downtrodden apprentice chemist in Georgian London, and secretly an aspiring alchemist on the side. When he is tasked by his master with delivering a mysterious illustrated book the Mutus Liber to Baron Swedenbourg, Peter accidentally loses it to an alluring and light-fingered young woman called Sukie, whom he meets on the banks of the Thames. Soon, a group of dangerous men are in pursuit of Peter, urgently seeking the book's return, and too late he realises its extraordinary value.
But where in sprawling London might Sukie be found? Why did she make such an overwhelming impression upon Peter? And what explains if it's real the Mutus Liber's extraordinary power? The search for the book becomes an urgent game of cat and mouse, filled with ruthless and unforgettable characters. And a key to the present might only be found in half-remembered events from Peter's childhood, and then far further back still, in the mists of Irish myth.
SPARKS OF BRIGHT MATTER is a book that sparkles with life and a rare and wonderful numinous quality, as it explores the liminal spaces between magic and reality, spirit and matter, love and lust. It will entrance readers of upmarket historical fiction.
