The Alps
History of a Landscape
For thousands of years they were considered insurmountable: the location of the Alps between the early civilized Mediterranean and the very fertile, equally early populated Central Europe made them a barrier for a long time, which had to be overcome in order to connect the two regions. Hansjörg Küster follows the history of the Alps from its formation by the collision of the African and European plates, its transformation by the Ice Age glaciers and the amazingly early use of its high altitudes to its exploration and present-day tourism.
