THE BARTER

Siobhan Adcock

A ghost story about two deeply conflicted mothers--separated by 100 years--and the impossible barter that ultimately binds them.
Bridget has given up a successful legal career to raise her baby daughter and struggles in her new role as stay-at-home mom. Meanwhile Bridget's husband Mark has become remote, working crazy hours. And now a terrifying presence has entered their home and no one but Bridget can see it.

On a Texas farm in 1902, a young city bride takes a farmer husband. On their wedding night, Rebecca first allows and then negates the powerfully erotic connection between them. She turns her back on John, only to give all of her love to the child born of that night.
As Bridget's obsession with the ghost grows--and as Rebecca faces the consequences of that one, fateful night--readers will race to the end of this novel to see how Adcock masterfully fuses these two stories.

Siobhan Adcock beautifully captures the emotional rollercoaster of being a new mom, not only the joy, but especially the sadness, the anger, the guilt, the sacrifice--the sheer terror of it.

The Barter is a delightful and utterly unique portrait of parenthood across the ages. Siobhan Adcock manages to express what is inexpressibly about motherhood and marriage, deftly capturing the banal and the divine, the give and the take. As funny, profound, otherworldly, and terrifying as love itself, this is a debut novel not to be missed.

Reading The Barter is like standing at the edge of an abyss: deep, dark, and terrifying, it is also a gripping and exhilarating story about fear, courage, and the demands and sacrifices of love. An enthralling page-turner of a novel that had me on the edge of my seat from the first page and continued to haunt me after the last.
