THE BOOK OF ROADS

Larry Habegger Phil Cousineau

Travel Stories from Michigan to Marrakech

The Book of Roads: Travel Stories from Michigan to Marrakech is the culmination of a lifetime of travel experiences, from the steel factories of Detroit to headhunting villages in the Philippines, the war-torn villages in the Balkans to the river roads of Canada once traversed by his voyageur ancestors.
Since graduating from college with a journalism degree, Cousineau’s wanderlust has driven him to visit nearly 100 countries as a backpacker, documentary filmmaker, travel writer, photographer, and art and literary tour leader. For him, travel gives us what his mentor Joseph Campbell called “the key to the realm of the muses.” As author of the best-selling travel book The Art of Pilgrimage, Cousineau continues to crisscross the world as a travel writer, filmmaker, and host of Global Spirit. His rhapsodic travel stories place him in the league of fellow travelers who are also masterful writers, such as Pico Iyer, Jack Kerouac, Jan Morris, and Beryl Markham. Phil Cousineau is an award-winning writer and filmmaker, teacher and editor, independent scholar and travel leader, storyteller and TV host. Cousineau lectures frequently on a wide spectrum of topics that reflect his mythic journeys, including mythology, movies, writing, mentorship, beauty, travel, sports, and creativity. Currently the host of Link TV’s Global Spirit television series, Cousineau has published 26 nonfiction books and has 15 scriptwriting credits to his name. His books have been translated into nine languages. For the past 25 years he has enjoyed his life-long dream of being a full-time freelance writer, filmmaker, and sports coach. An expert on mythology and film and the "hero journey" structure of screenplays, Cousineau consults on writing projects of all kinds. He lives in San Francisco.

True tales of travel adventures from a compassionate poet’s heart, which indicate that we, the people, are one family after all.”The Book of Roads is a very thrilling piece of work. I relished my long, slow reading of it.

Phil grants us a new perspective on our lives and world. We follow his lead and discover new connections with people and places, and reflect on our own experiences so the tapestry of our lives extends beyond its usual borders and we are made richer for it.
