THE CLOISTERS

Katy Hover-Smoot

In THE CLOISTERS, the friendship of a close-knit group of researchers at The Met Cloisters museum is shattered when one of them turns up dead, a mysterious deck of ancient tarot cards next to the body. What follows is a propulsive tale of toxic obsession, the lethal effects of ambition, and the echoing consequences of the choices we make, no matter how small they seem at the time. At its heart, THE CLOISTERS asks whether we can shape our path in life, or whether it is already decided by fate.
Ann Stilwell arrives in New York fresh out of college assigned to The Cloisters, a museum and garden renowned for its collection of medieval art and run by the charismatic curator Patrick Roland - a man who has spent much of his career exploring the history of divination through the museum's objects. The only person more possessed by these ideas is Rachel Mondray, Patrick's beautiful curatorial associate and sometimes muse. Ann is quickly drawn into Rachel's orbit, but the tightknit staff of The Cloisters is soon shattered by a mysterious death that reveals a rare deck of 15th century tarot cards. Now, Ann must decide if the tarot cards can not only teach her about the past, but also about her future.

Debut novelist Katy Hover Smoot is an expert in this field and is the perfect writer to bring this story to life. She's an adjunct professor of Art History at Sierra College and attended UC Berkeley for her PhD in Art History. Having worked in curatorial and research roles at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Musée D'Orsay, and The Clark Art Institute, Katy is intimately familiar with the complex world that unfolds behind the scenes at major museums.

Beguiling and atmospheric, an entrancing and gripping tale.

A story of academic obsession, Renaissance magic and the ruthless pursuit of power. Captivating in every sense of the word.

Glamour, power, seduction, ambition The Cloisters has it all. I adored this deliciously gothic, beautifully written novel.

The tension and foreboding builds gradually in this outstanding gothic debut, allowing readers to savor Ann's voice. The disturbing account plays with class differences and women friendship, set against a medieval, academic atmosphere sheltered from the city.

Elegant and atmospheric and suffused with brooding menace.

Sultry and sinister . . . teems with sexual tension, the secrets of divination, and scholarly obsessiveness . . . jaw-dropping.
