THE EYE OF THE SHEEP

Sofie Laguna

From the author of the critically acclaimed debut One Foot Wrong comes a touching novel about a family struggling to cope with a different and difficult child while battling their own inner demons.
In the tradition of Room and Carry Me Down, The Eye of the Sheep is an extraordinary work told from the mesmerising point of view of Jimmy, a young boy with a unique and brutally honest take on the world. Jimmy's father, Gav, is a working man capable of brutality and tenderness while his warm and comforting mother Paula acts as a buffer between the real world and home. Their delicate equilibrium is unbalanced when Robbie, Jimmy's brother, leaves home to become a seaman. After a perfect holiday week together Gav promises to turn over a new leaf. But old habits die hard and when he loses his job at the refinery the tension builds and erupts as Gav turns to drink and violence. Jimmy, ever watchful, is the mirror to his father's conscience and it's not long before Gav hurts the one who loves him most. Jimmy's compelling and inimitable voice takes the reader through trauma and heartbreak, but also humour and hope. Sofie Laguna has previously written for children and young adults. She is also an actor and lives in Melbourne. Her first novel for adults was One Foot Wrong (2008) which was shortlisted for the Prime Minister's Literary Awards 2009 and longlisted for the Miles Franklin Literary Award 2009.

A heartbreaking story about a special boy with special needs and the love and the lack of love that the world shows him. You'll need a box of tissues while reading it!

The Eye of the Sheep won the most coveted literary award in Australia, the Miles Franklin Literary Award.

The greatest achievement here is making this family's world not just compelling but utterly entertaining.

Laguna creates a world and a character and a language that we become immersed within ... This is humane, passionate, true.

A truly haunting tale that readers won't soon forget, from a compelling, original voice. (Praise for ONE FOOT WRONG)

Laguna writes with lyrical economy, and her craft elevates a tale which in its bare outlines seems like sensational tabloid fare. A disturbing story graced by powerful, poetic prose. (Praise for ONE FOOT WRONG)
