THE FLAWS

Irene Pujadas

Agile, uninhibited, pleasant and witty, they do not shy away from - perhaps they even seek - a rough or rugged patina, if not outright funereal or tragic. Stories to die laughing, though perhaps not so much, or, perhaps better, to smile in death. Stories about endings - of love, friendship, desire... - and about the staging of everyday dramas and inevitable disasters. With grace and panache.
The Flaws consists of twenty-one stories that embrace coarseness and black humor and explore, among other questions, the endof friendship, of love, of lifethe advice others give, lost parakeets, god meals, the scourge of tourism, literary movements, the forms of faith, belief, the often hilarious way human beings confront tragedy. Agile, simple, and profoundly alive, the stories in The Imperfect Ones are an irreverent and uncomfortable collection, sometimes dark and disturbing, sometimes hilarious and grotesque. The shamelessness -but what little shame- that Irene Pujadas displays on each page of The Flaws is soon noticed as a brilliant shamelessness and a very personal imagination. Discomfort and eccentricity in abundance, a twisted and peculiar look. A volume of irreverent, extravagant, original, almost imperfect stories. The Documenta jury praised their "clean and vibrant style, with polished and extremely vivid language and a very healthy touch of darkness and crudity. The narrative voice behind these tales is self-assured and ambitious, and the skill in the construction of each story is more than noteworthy." Irene Pujadas i Farré (Sant Just Desvern, 1990) lives in Barcelona. She has worked for several years as writer in several magazines and newspapers such as Ara. She is one of the three founders of the BRANCA magazine, a very hip literary and multidisciplinar magazine. She currently works at Angle Editorial.
