In an age of belief, magic is but a myth, a religious mystery not witnessed in Gul Kana since the fabled weapons of the Five Warrior Angels were used to banish all evil to the Underworld a thousand years ago. But as the prophesied final holy war draws near, rumor grows that some of the legendary weapons hidden for ages have been found. Yet for Nail, an orphan boy living in a small fishing village, most of these events mean little. He just wants the simple life and, god willing, a place on the local whaling ship. But the strange tattoos on his body hint of a destiny far greater. And when he discovers one of the lost weapons of the Five Warrior Angels in the mountains above his home, he is thrust into a nightmarish mission of unimaginable danger and soul-shattering betrayals. To survive, Nail realizes he must quickly unravel the mystery of who he is: the bastard son of a nobleman, the unwanted child of a dockside whore, or, as some suggest, the heir to a much grander, more ancient lineage. Only then can he truly begin his quest to save Gul Kana from the bloodiest crusade the land has ever known. In the tradition of genre-bending writers such as Tad Williams and George R.R. Martin, debut author Brian Lee Durfee’s greatest strength is taking these familiar tropes and turning them on their heads. Applying his artistic background to his prose, Durfee’s incomparable sense of detail infuses his story, his world, and his characters, making everything sharper, more vivid, and more textured than one could ever imagine. Brian Lee Durfee is a Utah artist and writer who has done illustrations for clients including Lucasfilm, TOPPS Trading Cards, Word Perfect, Wizards of the Coast, Tolkien Enterprises, Dungeons & Dragons, Applejack Art, Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust, Denali National Park, and many more. His award-winning art has been in the Society of Illustrators NY, SPECTRUM Best In Contemporary Fantastic Art #3, and the L. Ron Hubbard Illustrators of the Future Vol 9. This is his debut novel.
