The Foundation of the German Empire 1870/71
The foundation of the empire in 1870/71 soon marks its 150th anniversary. Once celebrated as great achievement it was regarded in the Federal Republic of Germany as the cause of the catastrophes of the 20th century.
But in the meantime research has accentuated or even revised some interpretations. The predominantly critical attitude has partly given way to an "understanding" of the time-bound nature of decisions and developments at that time. Michael Epkenhans clarifies the significance of the founding of the Reich and shows that it was - regardless of its effectiveness in the 19th and 20th centuries - just one event among many others in German history.
