THE GIRL IN THE MIRROR

Rose Carlyle

Written with the electric, jaw-dropping suspense of Before I Go to Sleep and The Girl on the Train, The Girl in the Mirror is an addictive thriller about greed, lust, secrets and deadly lies.
Identical twins only look the same ... Beautiful twin sisters Iris and Summer are startlingly alike, but beyond what the eye can see lies a darkness that sets them apart. Cynical and insecure, Iris has long been envious of open-hearted Summer's seemingly neverending good fortune, including her perfect husband Adam. Called to Thailand to help sail the family yacht to the Seychelles, Iris nurtures her own secret hopes for what might happen on the journey. But when she unexpectedly finds herself alone in the middle of the Indian Ocean, everything changes. Now is her chance to take what she's always wanted the idyllic life she's coveted from afar. But just how far will she go to get the life she's dreamed about? And how far will she go to ensure no one discovers the truth? Rose Carlyle is a lawyer and keen adventurer. She has crewed on scientific yachting expeditions to subantarctic islands and lived aboard her own yacht in the Indian Ocean for a year, sailing it from Thailand to South Africa via the Seychelles. Rose was a Michael King Writer in Residence in 2020. She lives in Auckland with her three children. The Girl in the Mirror is her first novel.

Riveting from the first page to the last, with a final mind-blowing twist you'll never see coming!

There are some books out there (The Girl in the Mirror being one of them) that the best 'review' is someone handing you the book and just saying, 'trust me!' It is a story you will absolutely be wrapped up in from page one. Most important of all, for me, in a thriller is the ability to give the reader that 'audible gasp moment.' Like Clare Mackintosh's I Let You Go, or The Wife Between Us from Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen, Rose Carlyle is the latest addition to the list of authors who can give readers that shocking gasp-out-loud moment that thriller lovers can't get enough of! This is a novel of reflection, refraction, of the utter incomprehensibility of the Other, both without and within. The Girl in the Mirror is unputdownable. I found myself deep in a tête-à-tête of just-one-more-chapter with myself over and over again, until it was well past midnight and the book was done... I simply cannot wait to see what thrilling mystery she comes up with next. Read more...

A young woman tries to outrun the secrets that her own actions create. The thrill of the chase gathers us up and pulls us through each page to the very last. And in that other game of pursuit, the author matching wits with the reader, Rose Carlyle is always one step ahead. Of The Girl in the Mirror's many surprises, the biggest is that such an expert psychological thriller, such an addictive ride, could be a debut.

Sometimes what you need most is an insanely plotted book about identical twins and white-hot jealousy and an ill-fated sailing expedition and identity theft and untrammeled greed and a huge fortune and competitive pregnancies and a long con in which the ultimate victim isn't unveiled until the very end. THE GIRL IN THE MIRROR by Rose Carlyle, is just that book.

Ferociously entertaining. A novel like a triathlon: part evil-twin thriller, part howdunit (or did-she-do-it?), part juicy family drama. Drop Knives Out and Double Indemnity into the blender, shake some Dead Calm over the froth, power it on, and you've got a cocktail like The Girl in the Mirror - fresh, flavorful, and utterly intoxicating.

Immensely entertaining, hugely original, highly recommended. Rose Carlyle takes the reader on a wild ride, across an ocean and into the depths of a family riven by greed, jealousy and subterfuge ... Like sorbet for the jaded palates of hardcore thriller fans.

A page-turner that's delightfully over-the-top, shocking, and full of twists, The Girl in the Mirror takes sibling rivalry to the next level. A jaw-dropping debut.

[An] assured debut... The intricate plot builds to a strong finale. Psychological thriller fans are in for a treat.

Rose Carlyle's The Girl in the Mirror took my breath away, page after page. It has it all: A superbly taut plot. Unforgettable, haunting characters. A setting that will instantly transport you to the lush landscape of the Seychelles. And one of the best endings I've read in a very long time. Bottom line-this book is exactly what we're all craving right now: a delicious, perfect escape.

Rose Carlyle more than holds her own in fiction with this thrilling debut...[Her] expert knowledge of sailing and vivid prose are on stunning display, while her research on twin psychology anchors the plot in reality. By the end, readers will realize they've been sailing a course both wildly unpredictable and expertly plotted.

A chilling story of identity and what happens when a person's self-reality is voluntarily submerged with another's.

Rose Carlyle's debut psychological suspense The Girl in the Mirror left me gobsmacked. With its exotic setting, incredibly drawn characters, masterfully intricate plot, and an ending I absolutely did not see coming, Carlyle doesn't just knock the ball out of the park-she sends it flying into the next universe. The Girl in the Mirror is a triumph, one of the best books I've read all year.
