THE GIRLS WITH NO NAMES

Serena Burdick

It's the summer of 1913 in New York City, and the comfortable, privileged life of the Tildon family is about to change forever.
Sisters Luella and Effie are inseparable, despite their vast differences. Beautiful and bold and a gifted dancer like their mother, sixteen-year-old Luella is idolized by thirteen-year-old Effie. Born with a heart defect, Effie has known that each year she lives is seen as an accomplishment by everyone except Luella, who understands Effie's strength, despite her small frame. When Luella befriends a group of traveling gypsies, it seems like an innocent rebellion against the stringent rules of proper ladies' behavior. She and Effie sneak out to hear music and have their fortunes told, escaping the increasing tensions at home. But their father Emory Tildon will not stand for his daughter's impropriety, and when Luella disappears, Effie believes that he has committed her sister to the infamous House of Mercy to teach her a lesson and protect his own secrets. Determined to rescue Luella, Effie manages to enter the House of Mercy on her own. But when she doesn't find Luella, how will Effie be able to find her way out of this place of harrowing suffering? Award-winning author Serena Burdick was inspired by the true history of the notorious House of Mercy, an asylum and work house for "destitute and fallen women" created in northern Manhattan in 1891. Combining extensive research with Burdick's signature atmospheric storytelling, THE GIRLS WITH NO NAMES explores women's lives in the turn of the 20th century, from the restrictive labor opportunities of immigrant and working class women to the changing societal values of the Gilded Age's upper class. Serena Burdick Graduated from The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in California before moving to New York City to pursue a degree in English Literature at Brooklyn College. Author of GIRL IN THE AFTERNOON, she lives in Western Massachusetts with her husband and two sons.
