THE HAUNTING OF MADDY CLARE
Simone St. James Simone Seguin
This is an exciting debut in women's suspense set in 1920s England.
Sarah Piper is living a lonely, threadbare existence in London when her temporary agency sends her to assist a ghost hunter. Alistair Gellis a rich, handsome, and eccentric young man has been summoned to the village ofWaringstoke where the spirit of a nineteen-year-old maid named Maddy Clare has haunted an old barn after committing suicide. Since Maddy hates men, Alistair needs Sarah to confront her and make her leave. It's an assignment Sarah never bargained for, and one that gets more complicated when Alistair's primary assistant, MatthewRyder, joins them. Like Alistair, Matthew is also a veteran of the trenches, and his war scars both inside and out go deeper than Sarah can reach in spite of the volatile attraction between them. Meanwhile they learn that Maddy's ghost is no hoax she's real, angry, and has powers that defy all reason. Worse, she takes a vengeful liking to Alistair. If Sarah and Matthew can't dig up the truth about her origins and her end in time, Maddy just might take Alistair with her to the other side.
