THE HAWTHORNE LEGACY

Jennifer Lynn (L.) Barnes

(form. titled: THE INHERITANCE ENIGMA)

Three months after the end of THE INHERITANCE GAMES, heiress Avery Grambs hasn't been able to find a trace of "Harry," the homeless man she used to play chess with, who she now knows is really Toby Hawthorne, the long lost and presumed dead Hawthorne heir. Avery is plagued by questions: Why has Toby been pretending to be dead all this time? Why did he seek her out? What secret was Avery's mother keeping about the day she was born? Thanks to a DNA test conducted in the first book, Avery knows that she's not a Hawthorne by blood, so Toby can't be her father, but she's at a loss for any other explanation that makes sense.

In her search for answers, she tracks down every news article she can find about the summer Toby “died.” There were four people on the island that night: three very wealthy boys and one local girl. All four perished in the flames. Or so the story goes.

Meanwhile, Skye Hawthorne—who tried to kill Avery in book 1—has begun seeing Ricky Grambs, Avery's wayward father. Avery hasn't seen her dad in years. Skye and Ricky are clearly using each other, and Ricky says he'd love to reconcile with Avery—and thereby get his hands on the Hawthorne fortune.

The stakes quickly ramp up as Avery and the Hawthorne brothers investigate Toby's disappearance - culminating in an explosive visit to the island that leaves Avery in the hospital.

Someone wants Avery dead. Their identity - and how to stop them - might be hidden in Toby Hawthorne's invisible-ink journals and secret codes. If only Avery can solve them in time.
