THE HIDDEN POWER OF WORDS

Sam Maglio

Reminiscent of books that change the way we see the world like PREDICTABLY IRRATIONAL by Dan Ariely, THINKING, FAST AND SLOW by Daniel Kahneman, and THE TIPPING POINT by Malcolm Gladwell, THE HIDDEN POWER OF WORDS brings to light the surprising effects that our everyday language choices have on individual decisions and behavior.
THE HIDDEN POWER OF WORDS shows how language is the invisible hand of human psychology, guiding every decision, shaping every opinion, and - more profoundly - doing so without most of us even realizing it. Maglio argues that human behavior is often guided by powerful, unassuming forces that are lurking undetected in the words we see and hear every day. Drawing on decades of new scientific research for the first time, Maglio reveals why language is the surprising common denominator that explains a wide range of phenomena, from sputtering economies and imploding personal relationships to floundering political candidates and polluted lakes.

Sam Maglio is an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto and the Rotman School of Management, with appointments in the Departments of Marketing and Psychology. He graduated from Stanford University with a specialization in Psychology and English and holds a Ph.D. in Experimental Social Psychology from New York University. He is well-connected with authors in his field and his work has been covered by dozens of popular print and online publications, including The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Forbes, The Guardian, The Daily Mail, the BBC, Elle, GQ, and Time, among others, and featured on networks such as ABC, NBC, and CBS. Maglio also speaks frequently with managers from large corporations, governmental agencies, and not-for-profit organizations, sharing insights on how they can help their stakeholders find the right solutions to communicate more effectively, make better choices, and improve wellbeing in the process. He is represented by the speaking agency Speakers Spotlight (other speaking engagements include a talk for the "German Society for Psychology" for instance). This is his first book.
