A Scientist Presents Evidence For Belief
Can science and faith coexist?
Most of us accept that evolution by natural selection is true, yet most of us also believe that we are not here by accident. Most of us accept that the laws of physics are universal, yet many of us pray for miracles. Does faith in science contradict faith in God?
As one of the country's leading geneticists and longtime leader of the Human Genome Project, Francis Collins knows what science can say about the code of life. Yet he is not only one of our most famous and respected physician-scientists, he is also a devout Christian, a man of unshakable faith. He has heard every argument against faith from scientists, and he can refute them. He has also heard the needless rejection of scientific truths by some people of faith, and he can counter that, too.
Collins believes God works in and through the world as we know it, and science can do a great deal to reveal His works. Collins explains his own journey from atheism to faith and maps the history and future of science.
Along the way, he tackles some of the thorniest religious, scientific, and medical questions of our time, from the Big Bang to the genome.
Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D. was appointed the 16th Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) by President Barack. In this role, Dr. Collins oversees the work of the largest supporter of biomedical research in the world, spanning the spectrum from basic to clinical research. Dr. Collins is a physician-geneticist noted for his landmark discoveries of disease genes and his leadership of the international Human Genome Project, which culminated in April 2003 with the completion of a finished sequence of the human DNA instruction book. He served as director of the National Human Genome Research Institute at NIH from 1993-2008. He helped to discover the genetic misspellings that cause cystic fibrosis, neurofibromatosis, and Huntington's disease. Collins, like C.S. Lewis, was raised an agnostic, and turned to atheism. His explanation of his conversion uses devastating, rational arguments to demolish the positions of atheists, one by one.
