THE LAST TAXI RIDE

Amin Ahmad

Next thriller in the Ranjit Singh series, set in NYC and the great Bollywood storyline.
Ranjit Singh, a former Indian Army Captain, now drives a taxi in New York City and works hard to forget his dark past. When the beautiful Shabana Shah—once India's hottest movie star—gets into his cab, Ranjit thinks his luck may have changed. But when she turns up dead the next day, he is implicated in her murder and has just one week to clear his name.

Jay Patel, a mysterious businessman who imports human hair, wants the murder solved too, and Ranjit finds himself caught between Patel's demands and the NYPD. Ranjit's investigations lead him to the immigrant underbelly of New York, where he finds an unlikely ally in Leela, an Indo-Guyanese nightclub hostess. But what is Leela hiding? And is Jay Patel really connected to the Mumbai mafia? In a city where no one can be trusted, and a dead-end alley can prove fatal, Ranjit has to use all his wiles to stay alive.

Ranging from the streets of Manhattan to the film studios of Mumbai, The Last Taxi Ride is a gritty and compelling look at the collision between East and West.

Amin Ahmad’s writing on immigrant life has been published in the Harvard Review, the New England Review, the Missouri Review, Narrative Magazine, the Sun, and the Utne Reader. He was a finalist in Glimmer Train’s 2009 and 2010 Short Fiction Contests, and has a “Notable” essay in Best American Essays of 2010. His essay and film appearance in the multimedia “Good Men Project: Essays from the Frontlines of Modern Manhood” received national media attention.

You can almost taste the roti and the kaali-daal, and readers will surely be hailing the next ride.

A house in India is not filled with things, is not a display of personal tastes and preferences; it is a stage for life to happen . . . And life happens, blazingly, in The Last Taxi Ride. A.X. Ahmad's protagonist, Ranjit Singh, is a Sikh and a former officer of the Indian army, a man who ranges the streets of Manhattan in a taxi cab and yet maintains the sensibilities of a vastly alien culture; a man who aims his laser-like vision at those same mean streets, forever changing our view of their chaos and pain. A stunningly fine novel. Noir as seen through a shimmering jewel, held up as an offering to Shiva." —Martin Limon, author of Nightmare Range "I couldn't stop reading this beautiful, realistic and riveting second novel featuring Ranjit Singh. The novel takes the reader deep into New York's largely unseen immigrant world as well as the cutthroat backstage of the Bollywood film industry. The Last Taxi is one hell of a ride and A.X. Ahmad's strongest book to date.
