The Last Voyage of the Tsar

Jörg Baberowski

Sometimes world history is condensed into a few days and individuals. This was the case in Russia in February 1917, when the Tsar boarded the train and the revolution broke out in St. Petersburg. Jörg Baberowski is a great storyteller. He has captured this world-historical moment in a unique way and made it reliveable: the last week of the Tsarist Empire as vividly as if you were sitting in a movie theater. The end of February 1917: people dance in the palaces of St. Petersburg and sing in the operas, while protests spread on the streets and the state order begins to crack. But because the Minister of the Interior believes he has everything under control, the Tsar sets off with his glamorous court procession and leaves the capital.
