THE MAPMAKER'S CHILDREN

Sarah McCoy

Two heroines from different centuries, with defining moments of bravery and resilience echo across generations.
Eden and Jack Anderson have done everything possible in their quest to become parents, from in vitro fertilization to organic foods, even moving from their affluent D.C. neighborhood to quaint New Charlestown, West Virginia. Despite all the right ingredients for a traditional family, their perfect fairy tale evades them. One hundred and fifty years earlier, teenage Sarah Brown, the daughter of abolitionist John Brown, has been left barren by a severe case of dysentery.
It is the summer her father plans to move the Browns to Harpers Ferry, WV. The summer before the October raid that will forever brand her family’s name in history and light the flame of civil war. For Sarah, the conflict is not only around her but also within her heart. She falls in love with a young New Charlestown-er, Freddy Hill. However, without the promise of children, she cannot accept his proposal of marriage. So what happens when there’s no happily-ever-after? For the Andersons and Sarah Brown, it’s just the beginning of their stories.

Sarah McCoy is author of The Baker’s Daughter and The Time it Snowed in Puerto Rico. She calls Virginia home but presently lives with her husband and dog, Gilbert, in El Paso, Texas.

I love the way this novel connects the past to the present. At first, these two heroines from different centuries seem to have little in common. But defining moments of bravery and resilience echo across generations for a truly satisfying story.
