THE MEMORY OF FORGOTTEN THINGS
One of the happiest memories 12-year-old Sophia Wallace has is of her tenth birthday. Her mother made her a cake that year from scratch. She remembers the way the pink frosting tasted. This memory and a few others like it is all Sophia has of her mother but she keeps them secret because as paltry as these memories are, she shouldn't have them at all. The truth is, Sophia Wallace's mother died when she was six years old. But that isn't how she remembers it. Not always. Sophia has never told anyone about her unusual memories - snapshots of a past that never happened- until she meets DJ. DJ also has memories that he shouldn't have. He has filled a sketchbook with drawings of his stepfather - a man he has not yet met.
When Sophia and DJ are assigned a school research project on solar eclipses, they realize two important things: 1) A solar eclipse might provide a doorway to an alternate universe 2) They were born on the same day when there was a partial solar eclipse, which might explain their ability to have alternative memories. Both become convinced that the upcoming solar eclipse will grant them the opportunity to make their alternate life come true. For Sophia, it would give her a chance to enter a world where her mother never died. For DJ, a world where he actually has a stepfather. But this shift has its own complications - as the day draws closer both Sophia and DJ will have to decide what they would be willing to sacrifice in exchange for a different reality.
