THE NIGERWIFE

Vanessa Walters

This twisty and electrifying debut novel about a young woman who goes missing in Lagos, Nigeria, and her estranged auntie who will stop at nothing to find the truth is perfect for fans of My Sister, the Serial Killer and The Last Thing He Told Me.
Nicole Oruwari has the perfect life: a handsome husband, a palatial house in the heart of glittering Lagos, Nigeria, and a glamorous group of friends. She left gloomy London and a dark family past behind for sunny, moneyed Lagos, becoming part of the Nigerwives - a community of foreign women married to wealthy Nigerian men. But when Nicole disappears without a trace from a boat in the affluent Ikoyi Harbor, the cracks in her so-called "perfect life" start to show. While Nicole projects an image of effortless wealth and happiness, a very different picture soon begins to emerge -- one of depression, isolation, and even violence. Who was the real Nicole? And where did she go? As the investigation into Nicole's disappearance turns up dead ends, her auntie Claudine decides to take matters into her own hands. Armed with a cell phone and a plane ticket to Nigeria, she digs into Nicole's past -- but the more she discovers about her niece's hidden life, the more her own secrets threaten to come to light and she has to confront her own buried history -- before it's too late. An inventively told and keenly observant thriller where nothing is as it seems, THE NIGERWIFE is a razor-sharp look at the bonds of family, the echoing consequences of secrets, and whether we can ever truly outrun our past. The novel was loosely inspired by Walters' own experiences. Vanessa Walters was born and raised in London, UK. Vanessa has a background in international journalism and playwriting, and has staged plays throughout the UK, notably Michael X. Vanessa is a Tin House resident, a Millay Colony resident, and will be published in HarperCollins' upcoming anthology, Relations. The Nigerwife is a hypnotically lush and atmospheric novel about the lengths we go to for the ones we love most and all the ways we weave past traumas into strength for the future. A stellar debut!

In this pitch-perfect psychological thriller, set in the glitzy world of Lagos' ultra-wealthy jet-set, a young ex-pat wife married to a wealthy Nigerian man disappears, and her aunt soon arrives from London seeking answers. As wise as it is gripping, The Nigerwife captures the glory of post-colonial literature in a masterfully paced thriller. Vanessa Walters' debut marks a major addition to the canon.

The Nigerwife is a gripping work of suspense, a psychological puzzle, a mystery, and a critique of marriage and high society... In this riveting novel about a young woman's disappearance, Lagos high society hides personal struggles and larger cultural concerns.

Lush, poignant and gripping with a killer ending to boot, The Nigerwife shows that sometimes the perfect life and the perfect marriage aren't exactly what they seem. Vanessa Walters is one to watch!
