THE NOISE

J.D. Barker James Patterson

Those who hear the sound don't speak. They don't scream. They can only run.

In the shadow of Mount Hood, two sisters are suddenly overcome by a strange vibration rising out of the forest, building to a deafening intensity that levels the only world they've ever known.

A psychologist and expert in large-scale medical emergencies is roused from San Francisco and flown by helicopter into a military compound in the Oregon wilderness. There she joins an elite team of scientists with top-secret government clearance selected to investigate an "anomaly" that has leveled a survivalist settlement deep in the woods.

The swath of destruction reeks of death... yet two children have survived. Investigators race to determine why one girl is infected but the other appears immune--even as the seismic-level destruction replicates, and society begins to buckle under the threat of a pandemic without hope of containment. But as the noise crescendos, military and scientific objectives give way to a single, urgent goal: survival.

A really entertaining thriller . . like Michael Crichton (who might have written something very like this), Patterson and Barker keep ratcheting up the suspense and the sense of impending doom, until, by the end, we wish we could read faster just so we can find out what happens next.?Booklist
