THE RUSH

Michelle Prak

After Quinn discovers a body lying in the middle of a deserted rural road, this propulsive novel unfolds through the alternating perspectives of a cast of compelling characters while readers piece together the mystery behind Quinn's macabre discovery. Set around The Pindarry – the iconic and isolated pub where Quinn works – an imminent deluge and lack of phone reception conspire against her attempts to seek assistance.

Meanwhile, Quinn's employer Andrea is back at the pub, sandbagging the place in preparation for the heavy rains while her husband is out helping a neighbour. Alone with her sleeping son in the back room, Andrea reluctantly lets a lone biker in to wait out the rain. Out on the roads, tensions stir among four backpackers on a trip from Adelaide to Darwin as they edge closer to The Pindarry – they haven't prepared for this kind of weather, but the flood isn't the only threat on the horizon

Michelle Prak has written several commercial women's fiction titles and short stories. The Rush is her first thriller and an earlier draft was shortlisted in the Allen & Unwin Crime Fiction Prize 2021. She lives in Adelaide and lectures in public relations and social media at the University of South Australia.

"An electrifying outback thriller that's unlike anything I've read – I couldn't put it down. The Rush will make you rethink your next road trip." —Mark Brandi "This book grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go until the very last page. Michelle Prak writes so vividly about the outback, highlighting its beauty and terrifying the reader with its dangers. I loved it!" —Kelli Hawkins "A sunny outback road trip with two friendly young couples: what could possibly go wrong? Like a river in full flood, Michelle Prak's heart-pounding debut thriller sweeps the reader along through masterful twists all the way to its shattering ending." —Greg Woodland "The most terrifying book I've read in years! I actually had to take breaks because I'm a wuss. I think it doesn't help that I was reading it while a) on a road trip and b) tabbing between the pdf and the Vic Emergency app to monitor flood warnings. Too real." —Shelley Burr "Michelle Prak doesn't give you a minute to catch your breath on this Australian outback rollercoaster. Compelling and explosive: you won't be able to put this book down" — Hayley Scrivener, author of DIRT TOWN
