THE PHILOSOPHER`S FLIGHT
Riveting in its seamless integration of philosophy into the fabric of the culture, THE PHILOSOPHER’S WAR wondrously re-imagines Great War America as it has never been seen before. It’s the spring of 1917 and instead of fighting Germans with his peers, Robert Weekes is mixing batches of silver chloride in rural Montana. Robert is an empirical philosopher—a practitioner of an arcane, female-dominated branch of science indistinguishable from magic—and a very good one. After a deadly accident puts his philosophical skills to the test, Robert rises to the occasion which wins him a scholarship to study empirical philosophy at Radcliffe.
But growing up in the shadow of his more adept mother and sisters, Robert has little chance to brandish his emerging talents. After a deadly accident puts his philosophical skills to the test, Robert rises to the occasion which wins him a scholarship to study empirical philosophy at Radcliffe. There he beings a tenuous romance with Danielle Hardin, a disillusioned young war hero turned political radical, who has returned to the college after rescuing an entire battalion of servicemen. Their union attracts the enmity of a fanatic anti-philosophical group. With his life in mounting danger, Robert strives to find his place in the struggle for philosophers’ rights at home and in the Great War abroad.
In the tradition of Lev Grossman’s THE MAGICIANS and Naomi Novik’s best-selling TEMERAIRE series, Tom Miller reinvents history by weaving empirical philosophy into this coming of age tale. Tom Miller has an English degree from Harvard and an MFA from the University of Notre Dame where he was a Nicholas Sparks Fellow. He is currently in his final year of medical school at the University of Pittsburgh where he plans to go into emergency medicine. His work has been published in McSweeney’s, Creative Science Quarterly, and the Cavalier Literary Couture.
