The Politics of Cooking
Why I Had to Go into the Jungle to Find Peacemaking Recipes
The succesful cook and author David Höner has been around the troubled regions worldwide. His continuing mission is to connect to people through cooking. For Höner, connections are best made in taverns, where the pulse of life beats the hardest. People love, people fight, and they make up. Höner talks about peacemaking meals, and the mission he and his organization Cuisine sans Frontières have: “Sometimes it feels like a mere drop in the bucket. But whenever I hear about children coming to our kitchen in San Josecito, and that they are no longer malnourished, or that landless indigenous people found jobs, or about the Pokot and the Turkana in the North West Rift Valley in Kenya dancing together at our fest, despite traditionally being enemies, I know that there is meaning behind my mission.”
