THE POPE AND MUSSOLINI
The Secret History of Pius XI and the Rise of Fascism in Europe
From National Book Award finalist David I. Kertzer comes the gripping story of Pope Pius XI’s secret relations with Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. This groundbreaking work, based on seven years of research in the Vatican and Fascist archives, including reports from Mussolini’s spies inside the highest levels of the Church, will forever change our understanding of the Vatican’s role in the rise of Fascism in Europe.
In 1922 two world figures came to power in Rome: Benito Mussolini, who would usher in two decades of Fascist rule and transform and ultimately destroy Italy, and Achille Ratti, placed on St. Peter's throne as Pope Pius XI. Although alike in their authoritarian bent, the flamboyant, hedonistic dictator and the stern, sanctimonious pope could not have been more different. Yet they developed a peculiarly close relationship, a curious codependency. Making all this possible was the mysterious Jesuit who served as the Pope's personal emissary to the Duce. With the opening of the Vatican Secret Archives in 2006, and the thousands of documents found in the archives of the Fascist secret police files and in myriad other archives in various countries, this unknown, dramatic story can be told for the first time.
David I. Kertzer is the Paul Dupee, Jr. University Professor of Social Science and professor of anthropology and Italian studies at Brown University, where he served as provost from 2006 to 2011. He has twice been awarded the Marraro Prize from the Society for Italian Historical Studies for the best work on Italian history. He and his wife, Susan, live in Providence, Rhode Island.
