THE PRIORITY LIST

David Menasche Jodi Lipper

A Teacher's Final Quest to Discover Life's Greatest Lessons

The Vision Quest as a cross between The Last Lecture meets Tuesdays with Morrie, but with a modern protagonist: David’s not your typical tweedy professor, but a 40-year old music-lover covered in tattoos, driven by a deep passion for teaching, and beloved by all his students.
David loved teaching, and found it gave him incredible purpose and identity, until this Fall when the side-effects of brain cancer left him unable to return to work. He could accept being told he was going to die, and even his newfound disabilities (he has limited mobility on his left side, and is partially blind), but he couldn’t fathom not teaching, being away from his kids. He began to form a plan. Last September, David began a cross-country journey to meet over fifty of his former students, both to recapture old memories, to create new ones, and to discover what he taught them over his 15 years of teaching – in other words, to learn what his purpose has been. It’s an opportunity few of us ever have, and especially powerful for David, who will stop being the teacher and become the student for the first time.
