THE QUIET TENANT

Clémence Michallon

Literary thriller, remindful of ROOM and THE LOVELY BONES, about an obsessive serial killer who holds a woman captive while living a normal life in upstate New York.
Debut thriller written with literary panache about a woman named May who is captured by a serial killer in upstate New York and confined to living in a shed on his property. But the outside world doesn't know the truth about her captor, Aidan Thomas, a handsome and at times charming widower who works for the electric company while raising his school-aged daughter. When May discovers that Aidan is beginning a relationship with a local woman in town, she determines that she not only must escape but also reach the new girl before it's too late. A captivating read that reminded me by turns of ROOM and THE LOVELY BONES, it's a novel that is certainly infused with Clémence's love of and immersion in Netflix true crime documentaries and deep-dive podcasts like "Serial" and "My Favorite Murder." Born and raised in Paris, Clémence is a French-American journalist who writes for the UK's Independent newspaper. She currently lives in New York city with her husband, and this is her first novel written in English. (Last year, she published a novel in French, from a small French publisher).

"I loved this book so much. So disturbing but so beautifully written. Clémence Michallon is an author to watch out for. A truly outstanding debut."

Author's article: "How Journalism Helped Me Write My Pandemic Novel" - "The topics I cover as a journalist inform my understanding of the world and of the worlds I build in my spare time. I've written about true crime and serial killers and other forms of violence a good amount as part of my job at The Independent. My upcoming novel is a psychological thriller shaped by my interest in all those things - the darker, twistier forces that I tend to obsess over until I wrestle them into a narrative of my own." "Expertly structured and luminously rendered, THE QUIET TENANT is told from the perspectives of several different women bound, both wittingly and unwittingly, to a single, terrifyingly familiar predator. A mystery that is at once riveting and heartrending, THE QUIET TENANT is a sharply insightful look at what it means to live and love as a woman in this harrowing world. It is truly extraordinary."

"Clémence Michallon has written a classic on her first try. THE QUIET TENANT is a daring and completely satisfying mystery; a one-of-a-kind; a bravura feat of storytelling.Who in her right mind would attempt a novel utilizing the first, second, and third-person? And then have the skill to actually pull it off."
