THE REDEMPTION OF PHILIP THANE

Lisa Berne

A standalone set in the Penhallow world, a Regency-era reimagining of the film Groundhog Day, in which a disgraced scoundrel is cursed to live the same day over and over again. It's clever, heartwarming, and romantic - truly a delight to read.
Philip Thane is no gentleman - he is sarcastic, lazy, and selfish, a veritable scoundrel who cares little for his reputation, and even less for the people he uses and then discards. Which is what he plans to do to Henrietta Penhallow, a distant relation and the elderly matriarch of the wealthy Penhallow family. Philip hopes that she'll lend him much-needed money to pay off his many, many debts, and she agrees - if he does a favor for her.

The favor is to travel to the little town of Whittlesey and represent the Penhallow family on Plough Day, a long-held tradition to celebrate the end of winter. This is the last thing in the world that Philip wants to do - why would he care about some rustic ritual? - but with no money to his name, he has no choice. How bad could it be? It's just one day.

But then he wakes up and it's Plough Day again. And again. And again.

Trapped in an endless loop, Philip desperately searches for a way to break the cycle. The answer: Margaret Allen, a beautiful and intelligent young woman who studies myths and folklore. If anyone will know how to break his curse, it's her. There are just two problems: she forgets everything once time resets at the end of each day, and perhaps more crucially, she absolutely despises him.

But as Philip spends more time in Margaret's company - and, strangely, Margaret begins to feel like she knows Philip, that they've met many times before - he realizes that perhaps the secret to breaking his curse is to find true love, and to become a better man.

THE REDEMPTION OF PHILIP THANE is romantic and heartwarming and wickedly clever and utterly unputdownable, an original tale that's unlike any historical romance I've read. From their first explosive meeting to their last kiss, Philip and Margaret have a relationship that crackles, and you'll be rooting for them from the start.

...expertly crafted.

Berne fashions another sublime addition to her Penhallow series, one that is brilliantly enhanced by a stellar cast of characters... and generous measures of the author's wry wit and wondrous sense of whimsy.

I'm a huge fan of Regency rom-coms and, as the original publisher of Julia Quinn's Bridgerton series at Piatkus, it was a delight to discover the gloriously escapist novels of Lisa Berne. This is a riproaring romp of a romantic comedy in Regency garb and it is sure to delight fans of Austen, Heyer and Bridgerton alike. Read more...
