The dead body of a young man is reeled-in on the Madison, the king of Montanan fly fishing rivers: an unlucky catch for a first-time angler and his expert guide, Rainbow Sam. With a Royal Wulff fly stuck through his lip and a stick jammed in one eye, it's an unusual, but easily explained drowning. Or so some would like to think. The sheriff of Bridger, Martha Ettinger, suspects foul play, but has to tread lightly since fly fishing is the top money maker in town.
As she follows her instincts, she soon finds herself crossing paths with a Montana newcomer named Sean Stranahan, and sometime private detective. As Stranahan and Ettinger each pursue their own line of questioning, the temperature in this small town starts to rise. Big Sky natives and millionaire summer gentry alike are concerned when shots ring out over the trout-filled water. All clues lead the pair back to Montana's Big Business: fly fishing. Where there's big money, there's bound to be big crime.
