THE STORY

A.C. McAvoy

Jessie Gale, 23 years old, has survived a car crash that killed her sister and shattered her own future as a professional athlete. By day, she trains and builds up her strength. By night, she works as a delivery driver for an Indian take-away restaurant. Every day Jessie makes sure that her runs take her past the prison where the man responsible for the crash is held. Award-winning journalist Ruth Bailey, 34 years old, is one of Jessie's regular clients and, as she lives in the house opposite Jessie's, an unsuspecting object of the lonely young woman's curiosity. For months Ruth has been working alone on a complex and dangerous investigation into a secretive tech company. When she wakes up in hospital but has no memory of how she came to be there, she knows that something dreadful must have happened. The doctors say that she attempted suicide with a cocktail of drugs and alcohol but Ruth knows that cannot be the truth. Jessie, who had delivered her order that evening, is the only potential witness to what really happened and unwittingly becomes herself a target for an enemy neither woman can see. In the hospital, the doctors give Ruth a choice between her freedom and a compromise to her integrity. Ruth must make her mind up fast because the enemy has found out that she is still alive and is already stalking her every move. Alone, vulnerable, and on the run, Ruth has to trust Jessie but neither has any idea who the enemy really is, only that they will stop at nothing to ‘kill the story' and avoid exposure.
