TIME TRAVEL FOR BEGINNERS

Jaclyn Moriarty

Three strangers' lives are forever changed when they're all drawn to a mysterious agency claiming to have unlocked the secret to time travel.
Anna, Teddy, and Jade - three stories converge on the Time Travel Agencya nondescript storefront on Military Road in Sydney owned by a former physicist, Dr. Katja Nastevski, who thinks she's discovered the secret to time travel. The science community thinks she has lost her mind. All three are "stuck" in lifeeach becoming entangled with the agency for reasons of their own. Anna is in desperate need of changeafter she's hit by a car on her way to her soulless retail job, she's given the chance to begin anew, working for the mysterious Dr. Nastevski. It's her dream jobarranging time travel literary visits with Bronte and Shakespeare! Plus it gives her something to obsess about other than her sweet and studious and vulnerable teen daughter Nicola, who she will do anything to protect.

Handsome Teddy is a genius at salvaging businesses but needs saving himself. He becomes a regular Agency client in order to step into the booth, go back in time, and get the facts straight regarding his troubled childhood and his recently imploded marriage. Plus, he gets to chat and eat cake in the Agency lounge with the increasingly appealing Anna, distracting her from her all consuming crush on the tango-dancing driver of the car that hit her.

And as for Jade, it's about vengeance. She is enraged by the Agency's "false" promises. It conducts its quack business downstairs from the small studio where she's taking an evening memoir writing class to metaphorically mine her past, because let's be real, the idea of literal time travel is insane. The present tense is challenging enough, with her spirited, increasingly bad-tempered daughter Holly, who may or may not be a bully. a lover who may or may not be Anna's crush.and a deeply buried secret too painful for words.

The question of just how legitimate these ventures into the past are is a mysterious, provocative, tantalizing, even heart-wrenching one to parse - but there is no denying that the ripple effects through all three of their lives are very, very real. Anna, Teddy, and Jade are on a collision course. The Agency is the cause. It is also the solution.
