THE TRAIL OF LIGHTNING

Rebecca Roanhorse

While most of the world has drowned beneath the sudden rising waters of a climate apocalypse, Dinétah (formerly the Navajo reservation) has been reborn. The gods and heroes of legend walk the land, but so do monsters. Welcome to the Sixth World.
A few decades earlier as climate change begins to be quite demonstrative it causes a cascading set of environmental collapses which result in a grand flood putting everything under 3,500 ft in the US under water. So the central west, where many Native American reservations are, is all that is known to still exist.

This begins the age of the Sixth World. In many native myths a cataclysm brings on a new age, we are presently living in the Fifth World, but the prophecy, like the Norse Ragnarok, is that the world will end that the indigenous will once again be in control of the land.

Our heroine, Maggie, is a monster hunter, a warrior who is both shunned and needed. She teams up with a rather hot young shaman, Kai, and confronts not only the power behind the incursion of monsters but the machinations of some of the gods themselves in a post-apocalyptic world. Lightning swords and battered pickup trucks and motorcycle gangs on the rez!
