THE WOLF IN THE WHALE

Jordanna Max Brodsky

The heroic journey of an Inuit shaman and a Viking warrior in an epic tale of survival, love, and clashing gods in the frozen Arctic of 1000 AD.
THE WOLF IN THE WHALE is a historical fiction novel with fantastical elements that features Inuit culture and characters, set during the Viking explorations of Vinland circa 1000 AD. The story, told mostly from Omat's - the Inuit main character's - point of view, is at first a coming-of-age story of an orphan, born a girl but raised as a man, a hunter, and a shaman, with his father's name and spirit. His isolated tribe is the farthest Inuit outpost in the ancient Arctic, and his people's survival depends upon meeting more of their own kind.
But when new Inuit finally appear, Omat's life - and his manhood - are shattered. Forced into a marriage and into a life as a woman, she begins a journey that will thrust her into a world of strange men and even stranger gods. Separated from her family after a battle, she meets and cautiously befriends a Viking who has become an outcast from his own family after the murder of his brother. Alone in the unforgiving Arctic wastes, they overcome their initial enmity, help each other to survive, and ultimately fight together to save themselves, their people, and their gods.

Jordanna Max Brodsky hails from Virginia, where she spent four years at a science and technology high school pretending it was a theater conservatory. She holds a degree in History and Literature from Harvard University. When she's not wandering the forests of Maine, she lives in Manhattan with her husband. She often sees goddesses in Central Park and wishes she were one.
