THE WORLD IS A NARROW BRIDGE

Aaron Thier

A darkly comic road novel about a pair of millennial parents-to-be on a divinely ordained mission. Miami couple Murphy and Eva have almost decided to have a baby, when Yahweh, the Old Testament God, appears to Eva and makes an unwelcome demand: He wants her to be his prophet. He also wants her to manage his social media presence.
Murphy and Eva are a young couple with a peaceful life in Miami when Yahweh, the Old Testament God, appears to Eva making an unwelcome demand: He wants her to be his prophet. He also wants her to manage his social media presence. Yahweh sends the two on a wild road trip across the country to deliver his message, making incomprehensible demands and mandating arcane rituals as they go. He gives them a hundred million dollars, but he asks them to use it to build a temple on top of a landfill, and forces them to endure a period of Biblical wandering in the deserts of the southwest. Along the way they are continually mistaken for another couple, a pair of North Carolina society people, and find themselves attending increasingly bizarre events in their names. At odds with their mission but helpless to disobey, Eva and Murphy struggle with the quintessential dilemma of whether now is the right time to have a child. Equal parts hilarious and poignant, Thier’s third novel is peopled with memorable characters including a half cat/half dog named Fluffy 2, eccentric billionaires, and Satan himself. Through wry observations about the biggest things—cosmology and theology—and the smallest things—the joys and irritations of daily life—Thier questions whether it’s God or, in fact, human greed that presides over our fates, and how much free will we're really afforded. Perhaps most pressingly, this novel asks: what kind of hope can we pass on to the next generation in a frightening but beautiful world? Aaron Thier’s first novel, THE GHOST APPLE (a semifinalist for the 2015 Thurber Prize for American Humor) was published in 2014, with MR. ETERNITY (“…sharp, inventive and compassionate…”—San Francisco Chronicle) following in 2015. A regular contributor to The Nation and Lucky Peach and a graduate of Yale University and the MFA program at The University of Florida, Thier received an NEA Fellowship in Creative Writing this year.

With deep tenderness and a wonderful, feather-light sense of humor, Mr. Thier rehearses ancient conundrums over free will and the existence of evil while itemizing the blessings that make life worth the suffering . . . Despite its irreverence, The World Is a Narrow Bridge is genuinely religious, a book that looks at existence with equal measures of fear, humility and gratitude. In a time when novelists tend to be more concerned with psychology than the soul, that makes it a rare and valuable thing.

Thier is hilarious and provocative, his worldly insights sagely and frighteningly on the mark.

"[A] wonderful new novel...full of all sorts of beautiful observations about history and life...

Only a writer as wickedly smart as Aaron Thier would think to write such a twisted and wild story about Florida and climate change and time-battered Daniel Defoe; only Aaron Thier could pull it all off with such aplomb and in such gleeful and spiny language. Mr. Eternity will be sizzling in my brain for a long time.

"Why is the world the way it is?", and how can we accept it?" This is the question at the center of Aaron Thier's hilarious, absurd, cosmically attuned new novel, THE WORLD IS A NARROW BRIDGE. Along the way he invents a genre of his own; the American magic-realist road trip.

In previous novels, Thier proved himself to be an imaginative and deeply funny satirist capable of bringing the past, present, and future to life. His latest is rooted in age-old concerns and contemporary issues alike: free will, race, politics, and environmentalism. While these subjects may sound heavy handed, Thier tackles each with sly humor and fully realized, progressive protagonists.Thier is hilarious and provocative, his worldly insights sagely and frighteningly on the mark.

This is a laugh-out-loud novel . . . [an] innovative, cerebral, and wildly entertaining 'trippy' journey that drives home essential questions...

With THE WORLD IS A NARROW BRIDGE, Aaron Thier has written a book for our particular moment in American history, and it's a testament to his amazing talent that he can pull the wreckage towards something beautiful, bending sure, huge themes to the singular experience of these unique characters and their 'ballooning Tic-Tac of a universe.' A wild, humane novel.
