THE WORLD WILL BE SAVED BY BEAUTY

Kate Hennessy

A Family Portrait of Dorothy Day

The World Will Be Saved By Beauty is a biography within a memoir that follows the lives of three women—Dorothy Day, her daughter Tamar, and granddaughter Kate (the author).
Dorothy Day (1897-1980) remains a widely celebrated writer, social activist, and co-founder of the Catholic Worker movement dedicated to serving the poorest of the poor. In 2000 Cardinal O’Connor of New York City initiated the canonization process with the New York Archdiocese recently requesting that she be reburied in St. Patrick’s Cathedral. But Dorothy Day is an unusual candidate for sainthood and this book challenges ideas of plaster saints and of saintly women.

The completed manuscript intertwines the present and the past, but remains rooted within a chronological account. This intimate portrait includes Dorothy’s anti-war activism during the Second World War and the Vietnam War (a part of her life that Eric Schlosser captured in his March 2015 article in The New Yorker) and culminates in 2007, when Tamar reads Dorothy’s diaries—now available after being restricted for twenty-five years—and Tamar’s death in 2008 with Kate at her side. A handful of select, some never-before-seen, photos from the extensive family collection are included here.
