THERAPY FOR RELATIONSHIPS WITH EATING DISORDERS

Kim Lampson Julie Schwartz Gottman John M. Gottman

A Clinician's Guide to Gottman-Red Couples Therapy

A groundbreaking new resource for treating eating disorders.
Effective eating disorder treatment modalities for adults continue to elude practitioners, and the rates of eating disorder relapse remain staggeringly high. Meanwhile, a vital resource for people with eating disorders remains unexplored: their romantic relationships. Tapping into this largely ignored vein of support, Gottman-RED (Relationships with Eating Disorders) is a new therapy for couples in which one or both partners have an eating disorder. Built upon a foundation of traditional Gottman Method Couples Therapy interventions, Gottman-RED adds fourteen new interventions designed specifically to help couples address difficult issues related to food, weight, body image, and exercise. These interventions encourage conversations characterized by empathetic engagement in which both partners are heard. This highly versatile therapy is the culmination of Dr. Kim Lampson's thirty years of working as a counseling psychologist with both couples and individuals with eating disorders. It offers a crucial, missing piece in the puzzling world of eating disorder treatment modalities. Kim Lampson, PhD, is a counseling psychologist, Certified Gottman Therapist, author, clinical supervisor, and nationally recognized speaker. She is also professor of graduate psychology at a university in the Pacific Northwest and the Director of NUhope Community Counseling Center. She lives in Mercer Island, Washington. John M. Gottman, PhD, is the cofounder of The Gottman Institute and of Affective Software, Inc., and was recently honored with 2021 Lifetime Achievement Awards by the Psychotherapy Networker. Finally! A vital missing piece in the landscape of eating disorder treatment! As a clinician specializing in both couples therapy and eating disorders, I've felt the frustration of treating these complex conditions separately. Dr. Lampson offers a transformative mode of therapy by seamlessly merging the renowned Gottman Method with innovative approaches to eating disorder treatment. Concise and easy-to-read, this groundbreaking resource is an informative must-read not only meant for clinicians. Highly recommended!

I can say without reservation that Therapy for Relationships with Eating Disorders needs to be added to the library of every eating disorder clinician, whether they plan to do couples work or not. Firstly, because any eating disorder clinician will learn invaluable insights, gain resources, and discover interventions from this book to use with clients, whether they do couples therapy or not. Secondly, because all eating disorder clinicians are dealing in one way or another with how the eating disorder affects their client's relationships, and vice versa.

Dr. Lampson delightfully weaves metaphor and story as she teaches therapists how to conceptualize and treat eating disordered couples. She offers innovative interventions to use with Gottman method couple therapy and clearly explains why it is so important to include partners in the journey toward recovery. This volume is an essential read for couple therapists.

Life is relational. What I love most (and there are many things to love) about Dr. Lampson's book is that she walks us directly into the relational dynamics that eating disorders create in couples. Dr. Lampson's keen insights about complex cases are what makes this book a must-read for everyone who aspires to work with couples . . . or clients with eating disorders . . . or both at once.
