TIGER WOODS

Jeff Benedict Armen Keteyian

Two award-winning investigative reporters, Jeff Benedict of Sports Illustrated and Armen Keteyian of 60 Minutes, offer a defining portrait of Tiger Woods -- one of the greatest athletes of all time and a man who remains an enigma despite a life lived in public from the age of two and a rise and fall that is arguably the most dramatic of any figure in American sports history.
Based on several years of exhaustive research and exclusive interviews with more than three hundred people - including friends, family members, romantic partners, and other members of Tiger Woods's inner circle, many of whom have previously refused to speak, the book is a riveting narrative that presents a new perspective on Woods' childhood and adult life, from toddler training sessions with his determined and complicated father, Earl, to his isolated upbringing, life-changing high school romance, and domination of a traditionally white sport as an African-American. It is a story of athleticism, determination, and of how greatness, while born in an individual, is also manifested. The result is an engaging and enlightening look at an very human American icon.

This wealth of new information, often backed by extensive public records, has allowed the authors to create a three-dimensional, never-before-seen portrait of the most visible yet enigmatic figure in sports.

Jeff Benedict is a New York Times bestselling author, a special features writer for Sports Illustrated, and a television and film producer. He has written fifteen books, including a New York Times bestselling autobiography with Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young.

Armen Keteyian is a CBS News correspondent and a contributing correspondent to 60 Minutes. An 11-time Emmy Award winner, he is widely regarded as one of the finest investigative journalists in the country; expanding beyond sports, Keteyian reached a new level in his career as the Chief Investigative Correspondent for the CBS Evening News, where he was nominated five times and won three Emmy awards since joining the broadcast in 2006.

If King Lear had been about golf, or if the great Russian novelists had turned their lens toward modern expectations and fame, toward the most American of fathers and sons, the result would be this book. The rise and fall of Tiger Woods in these pages is both mythic and poignantly small and human.

An exhaustively researched biography of golf's biggest star....What Benedict and Keteyian do better than in any biography I've read about Woods is detail the human costs of this machine-like focus....readers may find their sympathies for Woods growing as the Shakespearean tragedy of his life unfolds....The authors present Woods as a man 'both blessed and cursed' by his otherworldly ability to separate his off-the-course problems from his performance on it. Tiger Woods is a fascinating analysis of the former, but for golf fansand probably for Woods himselfhis worth will still be judged by the latter. Read more...

A whirlwind of a biography that reads honest and true....The tale of Mr. Woods's grand rise, grand fall and considerable indiscretions has been told in fits, starts, bits and substantial pieces in the 20-plus years since his PGA debut...but Messrs. Benedict and Keteyian have stuffed everything into an immensely readable 404 pages....The authors have laid out a saga that is part myth, part Shakespeare, part Jackie Collins, plus a touch of ESPN and a larger touch of the Lifetime channel....The story is irresistible.

It's a confident and substantial book that's nearly as sleek as a Christopher Nolan movie. It makes a sweet sound, like a well-struck golf ball. I found it exhilarating, depressing, tawdry and moving in almost equal measure.[The authors] bring grainy new detail to almost every aspect of Woods's life. Better, they have a knack for scene-setting....They refresh old stories by telling them from new angles....There is beauty and awe in this perfectly pitched biography....This intense book gives us Woods's almost mythical rise and fall. It has torque and velocity, even when all of Woods's shots, on the course and off it, begin heading for the weeds.

Variety reports that Tiger Woods is being developed into a documental series by Oscar winning producer Alex Gibney, known for creating titles such as, "Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room," "The Armstrong Lie," "We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks" and "Going Clear: Scientology & the Prison of Belief." He won an Oscar for "Taxi to the Dark Side." The biography's authors, Jeff Benedict and Armen Keteyian, will executive produce the project with Gibney.

I have been trying to write about Tiger since he was a teenager. I thought he was unknowable. This book proves me wrong. Here, finally, is Tiger.

Nearly a month after winning his fifth Masters title and 15th major championship at Augusta National, Tiger Woods was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom on May 6.

Meticulously reported, scrupulously fair, endlessly interesting, Jeff Benedict and Armen Keteyian's Tiger Woods reveals the human being long-hidden behind the golf genius. The story of Tiger's passage from driven prodigy, to lonely hero, to disgraced celebrity is compelling, and often poignant, from first page to last.
