THE RETREAT

Elisabeth de Mariaffi

Desperate to put a past abusive marriage behind her and get her career back on track, a dancer leaves her children behind to pursue a two-week residency at a remote mountain arts colony, only to fall into an obsessive relationship with another artist—a relationship that turns deadly when a freak avalanche traps the residents at the retreat.
Leaving her young children with her own parents for a two-week residency at the High Creek Centre for the Arts is hard to do, but an investment in herself Maeve knows she needs to make. As Maeve begins to fully inhabit her own body again, she feels a new power and a relationship with the compelling Sim Nielssen seems inevitable. When Karolina cautions her to stay away from Sim Nielssen, Maeve resents the intrusion and strikes out—by taking Sim home for what she thinks will be a quick fling, a one-night stand.

But early snows and fluctuating temperatures make for an unstable ridge: a freak early-winter avalanche snows the Centre in, and Maeve finds herself trapped at the colony, without power or cell service. Only six people are at the Centre when the avalanche comes down. Cut off from the road and town below, and with a rogue bear setting the parameters outside their door, the residents struggle to survive the storm.

With no contact from the outside world, Maeve feels trapped by much more than the weather. Sim's interest in her crosses into obsession, and it's all she can do to keep space between them. His attention reminds her of her controlling ex-husband, and she worries that if she doesn't placate him, he will become dangerous.

The group rises in the morning to find that a strange accident has taken one life. It's decided that a small group will hike down the mountain to find help, leaving Maeve and Karolina to hold the fort on their own. Relieved to be free of Sim, Maeve concentrates on learning the lay of the land, avoiding the bear outside their door, and focusing on getting home safely to her kids. But when she finds Karolina dead, Maeve begins to suspect she is not alone at the Centre after all— and finally understands that to survive, she's going to have to escape Sim — and only her own instincts and experience can help her.
