VAMPIRES OF EL NORTE

Isabel Canas

From the author of The Hacienda comes a novel set in the 1800s on the Texas-Mexico border about two childhood best friends who must risk it all to save their lives, family, and land in the face of bloodthirsty vampires...
As the daughter of a rancher in 1840s Mexico, Nena knows a thing or two about monsters. Rumors of strange lights and creatures lurking near her family home have been whispered about for decades, but a new threat comes from the north as settlers are stealing local land and getting closer to the only place Nena has ever known.

As a local healer - a curandera - Nena has committed herself to a lifetime of helping others. But she's never gotten over the mysterious childhood incident at the water's edge with her best friend, Néstor - the son of one of the vaqueros on the ranch - that left her nearly dead and Néstor banished.

Meanwhile, Néstor has been on the move since the night he watched his beloved Nena drown. Grief-stricken and believing Nena to be dead, Néstor ran and kept running. No amount of drink or women can make him forget Nena and that night with the glowing light, the cold air, the creatures with sharp teeth...

When a letter from Néstor's uncle arrives, begging him to finally come home and help the town deal with the dying animals, the bad crop, and the settlers encroaching, Néstor returns and is shocked to come face-to-face with the woman he never thought he'd see alive again.

But there are bigger problems going on at the ranch. Things that seem to evade rational reason. And together, Nena and Néstor and that night so long ago at the river, may be the only ones who can stop it.

Cañas delivers a horror novel full of expressive, sumptuous prose and enlightening historical details.

I loved Isabel Cañas' lush, gothic debut, The Hacienda, and I'm psyched for her follow-up, set on the Texas-Mexico border during the 1840s, and featuring two childhood friends (and perhaps soon-to-be lovers) reunited in a battle against the undead. Read more...

Isabel's writing is lush, vivid, and lends itself perfectly to this tale about vampires. I loved the Mexican history and culture interwoven with characters who reflected this beautifully. We need more stories like this to bring freshness to old tropes. If you are a vampire fan, I promise you will want to grab this one now. Isabel is an exciting voice you should be reading.

Lush, captivating, and richly imagined. Here, monstrosity is both human and supernatural; Cañas reminds us that the real horror has always been colonialism. Vampires of El Norte will sink its teeth into you.

I finished VAMPIRES OF EL NORTE by @isabelcanas_ last night and my brain is STILL living in this incredible story. If you're looking for something spine-tingling to read this summer, THIS is the book for you... Read more...

I found Isabel Cañas' The Vampires of El Norte an interesting entry into modern vampire fantasy. For one, it introduced me to a part of history that I am very lacking in, and for another, it presents vampires in a very different light... If you are looking for a historical fiction with a touch of the supernatural, then I would definitely look into The Vampires of El Norte. You won't be disappointed. Read more...

The many fans of The Hacienda will be eager for Cañas's second novel, which will also thrill and chill readers who'd enjoy a mash-up of Alma Katsu's historical horror, Andy Davidson's In the Valley of the Sun, and Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Read more...

A hypnotic, genre-bending supernatural historical novel that grabs you from the opening sentence. Haunting and pulsing with emotion, Cañas's writing crafts a world where monsters are real - but they might not be the kind you're thinking of. A one-of-a-kind novel that only she could write.

The lines between genres are now blurrier than ever, and that means writers who love to play with elements from different genres can mix them in any way they want. Isabel Cañas' Vampires of El Norte is a perfect example of this. At once romance, horror, historical fiction, and an adventure narrative about war, Vampires of El Norte elegantly navigates a multiplicity of genres to deliver an engaging story that cements Cañas as one of the best new voices bridging the gap between romance and speculative fiction. It also proves that the sophomore slump is, at least in publishing, nothing but a myth... Read more...

UK: Rebellion

Set during the Mexican-American War - this lushly drawn nightmare is a riveting story about two people facing terrible monsters and impossible odds. Cañas has the ability to tell a story that is at once sexy, frightening, and smart.

A wholly immersive, relentlessly tense, and deeply felt exploration of what it means to be a monster. Isabel Cañas writes with a historian's eye and a storyteller's heart, achieving both a haunting critique of colonialism and a riveting, star-crossed love story. With vampires! A generous, wildly entertaining novel that invites me further into my own history - I am grateful for this book.
